Great dialogue doesn’t just fill space between action beats—it reveals character, drives conflict, and keeps readers turning pages. But too often, writers struggle with characters who all sound alike, conversations that feel flat, or dialogue that tells rather than shows.
In this free three-hour workshop, you’ll build dialogue from the ground up using the same instinct-first approach that made “Build-A-Character,” “Build-A-Plot,” and “Build-A-Scene” so effective. Through timed exercises and targeted techniques, you’ll discover how to craft conversations that crackle with tension and authenticity—whether you’re writing novels, screenplays, or anything in between.
What We’ll Cover:
We’ll start by exploring what makes each character’s voice distinct, moving beyond surface-level quirks to find the speech patterns, rhythms, and word choices that make dialogue unmistakably theirs. From there, we’ll dig into the real engine of memorable dialogue: conflict and subtext. You’ll learn to layer meaning beneath the words, turning ordinary exchanges into moments of tension and revelation. Finally, we’ll tackle the practical work of revision—identifying your personal dialogue patterns and learning to polish conversations for maximum impact.
You’ll leave with concrete tools you can apply immediately to your current project, plus a deeper understanding of what separates functional dialogue from the kind readers remember.
This workshop is designed for fiction writers across all genres and mediums, from beginners finding their footing to experienced writers looking to sharpen their skills.
REWRITING THE SCREENPLAY & TV PILOT
Saturdays, 2:00 PM ET, July–September 2026

This 12-week workshop takes screenwriters and TV pilot writers from completed first draft to rewritten, submission-ready script. Weeks one and two cover rewrite planning—assessing your draft, crafting your logline, mapping your script by sequence, and building a focused draft-by-draft rewrite plan in a one-on-one session with the instructor. Weeks three through ten are intensive live page workshops: you’ll submit 8 revised pages each week, read aloud in session, and receive immediate craft-specific feedback on structure, character, dialogue, scene-level tension, and pacing. Pilot writers who complete their first pass ahead of schedule can begin a targeted second rewrite in the later weeks. Weeks eleven and twelve shift to marketing—polishing your logline, crafting query letters, building a pitch deck, and researching competitions, agents, and managers. Every participant is paired with a dedicated critique partner for the full program, and every session is recorded. An optional pre-workshop instructor analysis provides a professional assessment of your draft and a completed rewrite plan before the first session. Limited enrollment ensures meaningful feedback and personalized attention.
